“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity” – Albert Einstein
“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity. An optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty” – Winston Churchill
“…You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the Name of the Lord…” – 1 Samuel 17:45
We all know the Biblical story of David and Goliath (If not, you can read it here).
There are many lessons one can learn from this great story, from having courage to trusting in God. But I want to highlight two other key points about opportunity that can be taken from this passage of the Bible.
Firstly, opportunity comes from obedience. David went to the battleground because his father had told him to. If he hadn’t obeyed his dad, he would not have come face to face with Goliath, and been victorious in defeating this – essentially – big bully. David also obeyed God and trusted him in the midst of what seemed impossible.
When we trust and obey God, opportunities will arise. Those opportunities may sometimes look like giants that we cannot overcome, but with God all things are possible.
Secondly, when opportunity knocks, and you let it in, opposition will also come with it. With David, his opposition was not only this giant enemy, but also his own brothers who found him to be a bother, and didn’t believe he could go up against Goliath. We can understand his brothers point of view, but we should never put down a dream or vision that God has placed in someone’s heart. We should also be confident enough in God to know that what other people say to negate us does not matter.
Sometimes, opposition against us can even come from us ourselves! We can forfeit more opportunities and more potential by not trying, or being to afraid to open the door when opportunity knocks. You know what they say: you regret the things you don’t do more than the things you do do. And it’s true! Like I always say; better an oops, than a what if?
When opportunity comes, open the door and welcome it in. With the help of God, the opportunity can produce an amazing outcome, just like it did for David who went from an ignored shepherd boy to one of the greatest kings there ever was.
